As we all know, sleeping and eating well are very important and good for our health because they not only show our good health but also help maintain our healthy life. Some people also say that it is a happiness and luck if you can eat and sleep well every day.

However, what if we can’t sleep well?

In this article, I will share with you some sleep problems and their possible impacts on our health and our beauty, especially our skin.

Sleep Problems have different impacts on different people

A few months ago, I had a chance to talk to an old friend who has been living in another state. She has been studying for her courses in a university. When I saw her on the phone screen, I could recognize that she had dark under-eye circles. I asked her why, and she told me that she needed to stay in her school library until very late at night time in order to complete her courses’ assignments. She then had only one or two hours to sleep, and this repeated over and over again. As a result, her eyes has dark circles. But she told me that if she had enough sleep later, the dark circles will be faded.

And recently I have found it was difficult for me to fall asleep at night, and my sleep quality was poor. As a result, I haven’t had enough sleep. However, I almost didn’t have dark under-eye circles although I felt tired and sometimes headache. Thus, I think that sleep problems have different impacts on different people. In other words, our body react differently to sleep disorders.

What are common sleep problems that we can have?

I think they are insomnia and a lack of sleep.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which it is difficult for you to fall or stay asleep. The causes for insomnia can be a stress, an anxiety, and other factors. In my case, I think I use laptop/ipad or thinking about my work before bedtime, so this causes me to have a hard time to fall asleep.

A lack of sleep is when the time you stay asleep is less than the sleeping time your body really needs. The causes of this may be having too much things to do in a day, staying up late to do something, a sleep disorder such as insomnia, etc.

What are the impacts of sleep problems on our health & beauty?

For health, sleep problems may have a negative impact on our health.

According to National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes, “everyone needs sleep, but its biological purpose remains a mystery. Sleep affects almost every type of tissue and system in the body – from the brain, heart, and lungs to metabolism, immune function, mood, and disease resistance. Research shows that a chronic lack of sleep, or getting poor quality sleep, increases the risk of disorders including high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression, and obesity.”

This means sleep problems affects everything in our body, and we may have health problems if we have sleep problems for a long time.

For beauty, especially our skin, sleep problems may have negative impacts on it indirectly and directly.

May affect beauty indirectly through health

As health and beauty go together, if our health is not good, our beauty is somehow affected. In other words, sleep problems may affect beauty indirectly through health. For example, if sleep problems cause you to get sick, your sickness may make your skin become pale. A pale face when being sick is absolutely not as beautiful as a rosy face when being well!

Or when a lack of sleep at night makes you feel tired at daytime, your face and your eyes will show this tireness. A tired face is not as beautiful as an energetic face.

Also, obesity, as a result of sleep disorders, is not one of the standards of beauty.

The sleep problems may also have impacts on our beauty, our skin, directly.

A lack of sleep may cause dark under-eye circles by triggering the blood vessels beneath the eyes to dilate and making them more visible beneath the skin. And a face with dark under-eye circles is absolutely not as beautiful as a face without those dark circles.

In addition, some scientists have already done some studies on some women with chronic poor sleep quality, and they have found that there were a relation between chronic poor sleep quality and the increase of aging signs such as wrinkles, aging spots, as well as the weakening of skin barrier’s function. However, I think we still need to do more studies to confirm the negative impacts of sleep problems on human beauty.

Conclusion

In short, sleep problems may have negative and different impacts on people’s health and beauty. And I think we need to solve our sleep problems to protect our health and beauty.
